Tiger Explorer windshield loose.....
« on: April 16, 2018, 02:02:23 AM »
Hello Gents, I was cleaning my new Tiger (800 km) and notice the windshield is loose. I thought maybe the nuts were loose, so I got my toolbox and tried to tighten de bolts.  They wer tight, but the screen is still loose, can I put rubber washers between the windshield and the bolt?  The bike is still under warranty, but it is a minor thing and I better do it.
Also, what do you use to keep the windshield streak free, I noticed some scratches (very minor) on the shield...

Regards,
Patrick

There should be rubber washers under the screen between the screen and mounting frame.
Forward he cried, from the rear, and the front rank died!!!

Sometimes the mounting frame can be loose at the pivot point even though the bolts are tight. I suppose there has to be a certain amount of play to allow the frame to pivot in the first place. However any play can be negated by securely tightening the knurled adjuster knobs.

The screen itself is mounted on rubber covered fittings so they should not be loose when the four bolts are fastened securely ?

Knurled adjuster knobs? I think you might be referring to a Gen-1 possibly Griff, as my Gen-2 doesn't have any knurled knobs (that I've seen anyway), I suspect swamprider has an electric screen?

Swamprider there is some play in the electric screen on a Gen-2 once it's tightened onto the frame, not a great deal, but some, which is from the electric screen framework. But if the screen itself is loose on the frame it bolts onto, then you do need some rubber washers (mine though are quite thin, so I think they are there to save scratching more than anything else).

If its really loose though, and its the electric screen frame itself, then I'd suggest going back to the dealer, as that's a whole new ballgame.

Mine is a Gen 2, the electric screen frame is tight.  The winshield itsel is loose, I didn't see any rubber washers between the screen and the head or the bolts or between the windshield and the screen frame.
Will check again, but I think I'll have to look for thin rubber washers...

My Gen1 uses well nuts for the screen attachment. If you over tighten, you are going to crack your screen for sure.
If your GenII has thicker well nut heads or rubber washers I can see some play is inevitable. Don't over tighten!

Old school faucet washers should do the trick.

Another case of 2 nations separated by a common language? We call them tap washers 😀

Used many of them (and tap washers also ;-) on my Mk1 screen to elevate it a bit from the frame.
Many things in my current setup (Triumph touring + Batzen's kit + Powerbronze bikini underneath) can get loose, but not the screen itself ;-)
