Did a trip to Croatia last year which went into Bosnia so we had a guided tour around Sarajevo to learn about the seige there, and also stayed in Mostar. Great time and very interesting. You need separate insurance for Bosnia which is quite cheap and available at the border, although if just passing through where it splits Croatia you should be covered on you normal policy. Have a great time!

Bear in mind it's not EU, so you'll likely need to sort additional insurance and breakdown cover. You may well need a green card too.

For Balkan countries in most cases you can buy insurance for a week or two at the border. Last summer I travelled down through Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, FYROM (and thence to Bulgaria and Greece, which are in the EU, and back up through Italy). The exception was the short passage through Bosnia  / Herzegovina at Neum, where B/H has a sort of Danzig corridor through Croatia to the sea. There are apparently some unresolved political problems there. It's perfectly possible to ride through to southern Croatia, but it's not a good place to enter B/H. Apparently it's not only a question of insurance, but also if you then attempt to leave B/H at a border crossing in another disputed area you may be turned back. From what I gather, any entry point other than Neum should be fine for getting insurance.

Many thanks to everyone who put comments on here . Unfortunately I didn’t get into Bosnia due to having a extra day here and there , but ‘hey , there’s always another day’ . I had a great trip anyway. Is it illegal to have a road straight for more than 200 Mtrs in Slovenia?  Bloody beautiful!
