Hey folks. New 2018 XRX Low owner.
« on: December 29, 2018, 07:14:41 PM »
Coming from a 2016 Super Tenere. I only have 250 miles on the new Triumph. Very different machines. I had a 2015 Tiger 800 which I liked very much. One question. Sometimes when I start the Tiger 1200, it has a momentary loud rattle sound coming from the engine. The mechanic said it was normal and mentioned something about the cam chain tensioner on the day I purchased it. Doesn't always happen, but it certainly doesn't sound normal. My 800 never did that.

That's an annoyance, but not damaging the engine. The bike has a cam chain tensioner which is a combination of a ratchet and a hydraulic piston. As the chain wears, the hydraulic ram keeps perfect tension on the chain while the engine is running, and occasionally the ratchet will click over one more tooth. On your bike the tensioner is just short of clicking on to the next tooth of the ratchet, and so until the engine oil is up to pressure, the cam chain runs a little loose. This noise will disappear in time. You are not damaging the engine during startup, and the cam chain is under no risk of slipping. In fact after certain service procedures the cam chain runs a lot looser for up to 30s until the ratchet is re-tensioned.

BTW, you will probably only notice this after the bike has been idle for a few days or weeks, which allows the oil to leak out of the tensioner and back in to the sump. This is why you don't notice it all the time.

Thank you for the explanation. That's about what I figured in a less knowledgeable way. I assumed the tensioner needed oil pressure and glad to hear I guessed right. Still, it is an awful sound that I have never heard on any other bike I have owned.

:400: to the family, iamwhatiam. Great explanation of how the cam chain tensioner works. The noise is annoying, but you get used to it. You're going to love the XRX! :028:

So that’s what the noise is, huh? This just started on my 2018 at 12k km. I thought I had a loose piece of plastic somewhere, good to know.

Welcome to the forum, enjoy.
