Winter Camp, Shannonbridge - Ireland
« on: January 13, 2019, 06:27:32 PM »
Out with a few lads from the Dublin Touring Motorcycle Group for a winter camp night. Blessed with reasonably mild weather, wet in places but no real bother. There are no campsites in Shannonbridge but where there's a will.....The local publican owned a field with three donkeys in it, we could "sleep with the donkeys" for free if we ate in his pub, done! Great pub(s) & pints, a welly throwing contest, a view of the Shannon, good food and company. A great Craic all round.

Looks like a good time.

I understand all of this except for the "winter camp" part.

I see the camp, I don't see any "winter".  Is there an Irish colloquial meaning to "winter camp"?  What does it mean?

Because it took place in Winter, a season we have here between Autumn and Spring! I kow what you are really saying, especially  given the savage conditions reported in some parts of NA recently. I can tell you I was pretty cold that night and brewed up a kettle on a parafin stove to fill a hot water bottle. Last year (I wasn't there) the lads pitched the tents on a sunny winters afternoon and woke up to a few inches of snow, they struggled to get out of the field. That is exactly what it was, a field, no ammenities, showers or anything. We did manage to get a key for the local public toilet which helped.

Our climate is pretty temperate, no extremes either way. You can spend the whole summer with mild temperatures and lots of rain, you just never know. Along with the UK our weather is one of our main talking points.
