Trim Castle
« on: March 17, 2019, 04:41:53 PM »
Took a day trip to Trim Castle with a few folk. It is the largest Anglo Norman castle in Ireland and was built in 1172. King Henry II granted the liberty of Meath, which was then four times the size of the actual County Meath, to a Hugh De Lacy to provide a power base to prevent Strongbow moving north and extending his southern power base over more of Ireland. King Henry was worried Strongbow was going to declare himself a King so he had to make a statement with the loyal De Lacy. Guided tour for our little group of ten was €4 each, bargain. Plenty of places for coffee nearby in the town. From the roof you can see the large statue of the Duke of Wellington who went to school in Trim and who's family owned a lot of local land (I think the castle for a period too, not sure on that bit). I could go on forever about the great bits of history and interesting facts on the way life was. It's sunny in the pictures, it lashed rain for the whole two hour ride there, stopping just as we arrived!
