Noise in 2nd 3rd & 4th gears
« on: July 10, 2019, 01:33:12 PM »
Hi I have just picked up my 2016 XTR with 3000k on it. I have a question that I hope someone my be able to help. When I ride off and go through the gears under light throttle there is this whine coming from the gearbox 3rd gear seams to be the worst. when you take the load off the drive line it go's or reduces. If you ride it hard you don't hear the wine, is this normal for a explorer???

A video would help a lot. But you may be hearing the shaft drive and if you are not used to it that might be sounding different to your ears?

Hi thanks for that, I have never ridden a shaft drive bike so it may be the sound I am hearing. The noise is like a chatter or grinding sound, and when I give the bike heaps I don't hear any abnormal sounds its only under light throttle which is most of the time. I will see if I can do a video.

That would be the sound of a dragging final transmission.
Chain drives also do it, usually much louder (depending on the chain tension) but on different audible frequencies. That could explain you noticing it.

My 2012 Gen 1 with 27000 miles makes a whining noise most noticeable in 2nd gear. I have owned it for the last 5000 miles and the noise has not changed. I don’t really notice much noise in any other gears except when I have it fully loaded with aluminium panniers and travel at approximately 115 kmh when it makes a high pitched whine. It worried me but it doesn’t seem to do it without the panniers so I am thinking it is some strange resonance going on. 🙏😬
