Gearbox blown....gutted. :,-(
« on: October 20, 2019, 02:36:55 PM »
Bought a very low mileage 2012 tiger recently. Only done 120 miles so far. Had a dry day today so thought I’d go for a little pootle, went to overtake a short line of vehicles and booom gearbox disintegrated upon gear change. Absolutely gutted.  :003: currently sat waiting for recovery in the rain.

Did you perhaps forget to fill the engine with oil?

Whoever sold you that bike, knew or ought to have known that the gearbox had problems at the time of sale. I would be going after him/her/them. More info on gearbox issues can be found here:

Do you really think so? I had not had any trouble with it for or any hint of a problem until yesterday’s ride. It missed a gear when I was setting off then the whole think let go about 4 miles later. However it does seem strange that it let go so soon after the sale.

Sudden and complete failure on gearboxes are pretty rare on this forum!
Usually, there are precursor signs and one or two gears fail.
At least you weren't harmed in the process!

Symptoms start with the occasional missed gear and false neutrals. As the selector shaft wears further, gears begin to clash until two gears are selected at the same time. 120 miles is not very far to observe these kinds of symptoms.

Also, whomever sold you the bike, must've known. This is the first time I'm hearing of a gearbox blowing on any bike, btw. So sorry that you had to go through that in the rain. I'd never buy a used bike from an individual - only through dealers just so that I can blame them in the aftermath for things like these. What if the previous owner had no idea either - surely he will play dumb now.
