Am I the winner??? - Rear Hub failure at <400 miles
on: February 09, 2020, 10:16:55 PM
Yep my new Tiger 12 XCa has had a complete rear hub failure at less than 400 miles!!!  the back wheel wobbles by about 10 - 15mm!  It is back with the dealer.............

Slightly concerned as I was on the motorway wondering why the bike was so unstable!?  I had checked the tyre pressures and the bolt tightness twice.  I was starting to think it was me not being able to ride properly but Ive had a Gen 1 and 2 prior to this.

Really annoyed :192:

holy crap. with this, you may be the winner indeed. less than 400 miles, that pretty much means that thing came out of the assembly line like that... British engineering at its best.

Was there oil in the hub?

Weird one that. I’d be regretting the bike for a complete replacement after a significant failure.

It could be a bit  late to reject it as it’s being repaired I assume - was a quality issue on a component- they will be checking the supply and may look further  - you should look for some goodwill maybe an acccesory ! Good luck

they won't say.

There was no oil leak, so either it never had any in or its still there.  I'll find out more when i pick it up but they did say the hub should come filled as they don't do it in PDI

It makes you wonder why you pay the big bucks for the PDI, when they don't even check the fluid levels.  :003:

Personally I would suspect mis-assembly or a sub-standard component rather than a lack of oil. Surely a lack of oil would cause the hub to seize or disintegrate internally but not make the wheel wobble?

No doubt the consequence of no oil could be catastrophic, possibly locking the back end up etc, but I would expect a lack of oil to be apparent by noise & vibration before the wheel came loose.

But whatever the cause quality control at the factory or the dealer's PDI should have spotted it.
