Large calves...17" min...Boots???
on: June 25, 2020, 05:21:05 AM
I have large calves....measured at 12 inches off the floor, my right calf is 19 inches, my left calf is 17 inches ( due to a bum knee ). I was wondering about full length boots. I have ankle - 3/4 boots but want some higher performance boots for the protection. Was wondering what you are wearing to cover your large ( 17" min ) calves???

No idea what my calf sizes are but often have issues getting into ski or wellington boots so feel your pain.
I've the old version of these and have no issues:

Mine are just as big, if not bigger.  Not that this is a contest or anything...    :034:

I have the older version of these Sidi boots:

You're basically looking for a boot that uses velcro, and either folds over itself in front, and/or uses velcro straps.  I've found this type works well, as there's enough velcro to make the opening of the boot large enough for my calves.

With the longer boot, be sure to get socks that go higher than the boot, or you'll end up with chaffing and a bad rash, with the top of the boot rubbing against your bare skin.  Thin wool socks work well.

Those Sidi Gore Tex boots should be just what you're looking for. The Velcro makes them infinitely adjustable and they are excellent all around boots, comfortable from when I first put them on. I've had mine for three years now and they are holding up well here in the rain capital of the U.S.

I have 17" too and struggle with zipped boots, foldover/velcro boots are the trick as mentioned above. I phoned Sportsbikeshop.co.uk specifically to ask about boots with a generous calf cut. The response was that the TCX brand have a larger calf cut that most others. That's what I use now but not a full length, I use a mid length but that still comes up to the largest part of my calf.

My Daytona boots look conventional but have a wide velcro-ed pleat down the back. It allows some calf size adjustment, but don't know if it would accommodate 17" calves. Could be an option if anyone doesn't like the off-road type boots.

Altberg in the UK do made to measure boots, I’m sure they would be able to help.
