But my favourite roads are further south in N.Portugal, especially the Serra de Estrela mountains. Only trouble is its further from the ferries and very sparsely populated so finding accommodation isn't as easy as N.Spain, but worth the effort.

I wanted to get into Portugal, but time was against us. Britanny Ferries took three days from us by cancelling a sailing - not surprising - it was like the Marie Celeste on the ferry we did get.

We didn't hear a single English voice or see a single British vehicle in 14 days (after we had left Santander).

I always wondered what the poles were for but never got around to looking into it.  :008:

Do you mind me asking how you got on given the Foreign Office travel advise? Did your insurance cover you, were there any problems, questions at the ferry?

I’ve been desperate to get away for months and have postponed my ferry twice now. I’m aware of Battleface insurance but it gets pretty pricey when you look for a few months cover.

Thanks.

That's my usual gauge of how f'd up the winters are in a given place. When I see those poles around the perimeter of houses, roads, fire-hydrants I know. It's a sh!tshow of a winter they have around those parts  :008:

Those videos make me want to fast forward to next September!

Had a Hub & Spoke trip planned with a few friends this last September but the need to quarantine on our return kyboshed it. We'd hired a villa 15km outside of Santander as a base then riding daily with a couple of overnighters in for good measure.

I'll be heading back next september as well, ferry booked, just hoping the pandemic will have receded by then.
