The Pan America.......
on: April 30, 2021, 08:40:58 PM
I suspect, that there are a few here like me who consume new motorcycle media voraciously.
Over the last fortnight I’ve watched a few of the launch reviews for the American entry into the ADV world.
By the sounds of things they’ve managed to do an excellent job, delivering a motorcycle that ticks almost, if not all the boxes required.
The thing that I I find most interesting is the “at rest ride height adjustment.”
While not really an issue for me I think the idea will take of across the segment.
Basically, the suspension lowers automatically as the bike comes to a standstill, and raises again as the rider moves off.

I’m not planning on buying one, I’m very much in love with my Blue, but I truly hope the bike is a massive success.
The added competition will drive innovation in the segment, and I think the world would be less without Harleys.

Link to a short review I watched with morning coffeee.

I'm worried about reliability being H-D and a new engine design, but they knocked it out of the park with design, features, and price.

The suspension is almost a dead ringer for the Tiger. Auto preload adjust, and the ride height adjust is the same as our "off-road" TSAS setting but automated. It is nothing like the all singing Ducati Sky-Hook or BMW Active damping which in my book is a bit suspect. I like my damping to be where I set it, not where the computer sets it. Its big win is the zero valve adjustment. Although a V-Twin I see a lot of similarities between the T12 and this new Harley. Neither are torque monsters or 170HP mad machines, just a smooth delivery of available power for relaxed mile munching.

Our bikes don’t raise and lower as we stop and start do they?

I am interested to see if Pan Americas will ever be seen out on the road, all by themselves, or whether it will require a group of a half dozen or more to ride to the bar (OK, pub) a half mile down the street ...

I DO see the appeal of the bike. Maybe if I get to see one in person (not so far), it might appeal to me.  But for now I am staying on my TEx.

Once I see it, I cannot unsee it. I don't know why Mo has to deal with this abuse  :745:

That’s like the Africa Twirl logo, once you’ve noticed that, that’s what it is.

No but you can make them do that manually if you want to. On the XCa and XRt set the TSAS to off-road in the "programmable Rider" mode but leave ABS and Traction control on in a normal mode, e.g. road. Now when you come to a town you can change into that "Rider Mode" on the fly without stopping, the rear preload will lower the bike. When you are leaving town just select any other rider mode, say road and the rear preload will come back up whilst in motion.

So, not so slick or quick and you wouldn't use it every junction but the same effect.
