I did 6400 miles on the factory Metzelers on my 1200 XRT, and the front went from looking usable to threadbare on the way to the tyre dealers! The rear was well squared at that point.

I put Conti Trail Attack 3 on, and have just changed that set after another 7000 miles, because of the rear being squared off. However, there was still usable tread on both the front and rear.

If you look elsewhere on the forum, there's not a lot of good words said about the Metzelers, mainly due to the perceived tyre noise. The Conti are nice; very grippy on tarmac and in the wet, and ok on a bit of mild off-road (not mud or snow though).

Cheers

My front tire cupped around 5K miles.  Most probable from too heavy front braking as the rear brake feels weak.  As rear tire was still fine, replaced with same Metzler for uniformity.

Just got a nail hole in the rear at 7K and looking for best replacement.

Rambo, I changed mine to Pilot 5 trails. I’ve only done about 600 miles on them but they feel really good and very grippy. We’re off to Yorkshire for four days next week so I’ll let you know how they go on a long run with luggage and lots of twisties

I got a whisker under 3000 miles out of my front tyre which I think is pretty poor. I took my bike down to Aberdeen for a service and checked the tyres, etc before I left home and they appeared to be ok. By the time I’d done the 200 miles to get to the dealer the front tyre was really badly worn but only on one side, verging on being illegal. Unfortunately the only tyre they had in stock was another NXT so I had that fitted. By the time I do another 3000 miles the rear will need doing as well so I’ll change them both for Trail 5s or something. Unfortunately that might be a long time away yet as I’m now laid up for the next 3 months or so with a snapped Achilles’ tendon.

Ouch! That sounds painful. We’re doing the NC500 in late September so we’ll wave as we go by 😎

Joe & All,

I'm just about to replace the Road 5 Trails on my XRT after 5000 (mostly non m-way) miles. . Front down to wear limit but profile & handling OK...rear has a good few miles left before reaching wear limit. I'd lowered the suspension 10mm and dropped the forks so must be pushing the front more than standard.

Anyway, am very pleased with handling in dry & wet and will replace next week as local dealer has a set in stock.

Cheers

Don't you mean raised the forks?

Less than 5k on the tyres  and I have the same problems with the Metzlers. The most worrying part is how quick the front became illegal. Was fine tread wise, 90mls later and it's illegal. Have gone for another of the same on the front just to keep the same on front and rear. Got to wonder why Triumph still recommend these. On the plus side I have to say that the grip has been very good. So if it comes down to grip over longevity I know which I prefer.
