High mileage TEX - rebuilding.... everything?

Hi all, new member, new TEX owner.

With 80,000 miles and known issues (eg. TPS bad, needs valve adjustment) , I was able to score a cheap G1 model here in Canada.

I am a mechanic by trade and am wondering what drivetrain parts I should be looking at rebuilding. The gearbox has the infamous 2nd gear popout and so I will be opening it up regardless.

Should I replace other gears as well? The clutch is not slipping.

Im hoping there is a rebuild kit?

    Hi & welcome!  :401:

Congrats on the find. Did they share any maintenance history with you or are you flying blind with regards to what past servicing has & hasn't been done?

Its had the front fork seals done, other than that nothing else for major work.

I also believe the top end has not even been 'warrantied' .... top end sounds very quiet though, and it falls into the early model category vin. However at this point I would rather let that be if things are working good for this long.

All in all, it looks amazing for 80,000 miles. I have a KLR with 1/3 the miles and it looks way worse.

After 80k miles, there's nothing wrong with "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."  :001:

You'll get a good look at the internals as you take it apart to check the valves.
      - The rubber throttle body boots - some people have experienced issues with them cracking. Worth checking them out. Make sure you seat them correctly when you put things back together.
      - I don't know if you'll be able to view the timing chain & tensioner when doing valves. This is one job I hire out. But if you can access them, it wouldn't hurt checking both for wear
      - The service manual is a great reference for these jobs, grab one if you can find one. I posted my Google Doc parts shopping list in one of the 2nd/6th gear repair threads, you can see it in my post history too.
      Lube the headstock bearings

Sadly there's no transmission rebuild kit, as far as I know. I did the 2nd gear fix last year and just bought all the parts individually from World of Triumph. I replaced 2nd gear, 6th gear as it's adjacent to 2nd, and as several parts within the gearchange assembly (pivot assembly, selector) at the same time. While you're in there, you'll be able to see any additional damage to the shift forks (replaceable) or input/output shafts (bad news). It's also a good time to lube the driveshaft, as it has to come off to access the transmission.

I ride mine pretty hard and it's been quite dependable aside from a few electrical bugs, and it still looks great at 50k miles. If i think of anything else, I'll post it.

Thanks - should I replace the EVAP hoses too as per the Service interval recommendation? Is this even an issue?

For me personally, I'd see how they look then make the decision to replace or not. If not cracked or clogged and you're not experiencing any bad symptoms, I'd leave them be.

Awesome, and here I thought the responses were going to be a LAUNDRY list of common failure points - having things on condition sounds like its a goodly built bike.

eg. "part X WILL fail on you if you dont do Y after 50,000 miles "

From my experience on my 115k mile Trophy, a looksee at the drive shaft joints might be in order.  The front u-joint was almost frozen up.  The rear was fine.  At 80k you might want to start looking at it.

Thanks, just noticed a CAKE of grease under the driveshaft, by the large rear rubber seal. No doubt parts will need to be thrown at the driveshaft.

I've had 3 high mileage Triumphs and barely a spot of bother with any of them. I've heard of driveshafts cratering at high mileage, but as long as it's quiet I wouldn't be worried about much else
