Fourth gear running badly. 2018 1200 XCA

Hello all. I've got a bit of a major problem with my 2018 XCA. Fourth gear no longer develops power and instead makes the bike shake and stutter alot. The gear can be selected and is indicated on the dash. As soon as power is applied, it skips and shakes in the gear selected. Has anyone had this before?

I'm in two minds that is mechanical (most likely) or possibly electrical. The electrical thought is that it is an ignition or injector issue that has somehow put its self on fourth. It feels like the early days of crude fuel injection when the injectors come on at low speed and low gear and gives that lurching. I can only see this being because Triumph did a 20k service a day before for me. I wonder if a circuit or component has been upset (error code checks being done tomorrow)

The mechanical thought is because sometimes when I upshift with the quick shift, the gear (usually fourth) gets spat out, the revs fly up and it clunks back in to gear or the next one up. That cannot be good for the box while under load. Why would it do that though? Surely one it is in gear, it is in gear. Why would it get spat out? Its almost like a false neutral if i'm too light with the upshift. I dropped the oil out it is is completely free of any metal of any description. So is the filter. Which I find odd. Surely there would be some trace of metal filings if there was damage.

All of the other gears function perfect with clutch, quickshift and blipper. Each gear is indicated correctly on the dash, even fourth gear. Going off 'seat of the pants' I can't feel or hear grinding. So i'm baffled by this. And somewhat annoyed. I'll be on the phone to Triumph tomorrow. I don't expect much out of them.

They will probably tell you to go to the dealer and have the gearbox disassembled completely for diagnostic (maybe at your expenses, unless you are eligible for a goodwill gesture (e.g., clean maintenance record)).

Indeed having that only on the fourth gear is unusual. Most gear problems happened between 3rd and 2nd (though I don't remember if this problem was happening on Mk3). The electrical hunch is interesting but seems a bit unlikely to me. Is your fourth gear capable of running (say under light load) or not at all anymore?

Yep that they have done. It has just had its 20k service done with them which is another step on its full Triumph service history.

So I understand concerning 2nd and 3rd. The person I spoke to said that he hadn't heard of 4th giving issues before. Fourth can be selected just fine, but it can't take any load at all. It does try to drive the bike, but it just rattles and skips in the process

Sounds very mechanical to me. Since you didn't find any metal residue in your oil, it could be something with the selector fork?

My gut feeling is you have lost a couple of teeth off your 4th gear cog, although I would have expected to have seen the bits in your sump.
I guess one tooth may have been become welded into the next recess? but would would rattle like fury if that had happened.
