RECALL - ECM Replacement
on: January 20, 2014, 08:11:37 AM
Anybody heard anything about next Triumph action at the Tex?

There shell be ssomething about changing the ECU at some bikes next time,
may be the ECU causes the problems with the TPS and P2119 failure?

Actually I don't know something exactly about this, but we have this theme since end of last
week at german tiger board.

Unlikely IMHO.

If mechanical problems are caused by a ECU, this is most probably because of a wrong software. An ECU is basically a computer. The probability of it sending wrong orders to the bike whereas its software is functional is extremely low.

"When in doubt, blame the computer" (popular whining song in most offices ;-)

If the ECU is shutting down these bikes due to a TPS error, as the rider reports would indicate, then it's more likely that Triumph are not changing the ECU but are more likely releasing a new firmware update for it, so in-effect changing the way it works. Maybe they'll introduce a 'limp-home' mode where the bike is still rideable at a low speed, rather than shutting the bike down completely and causing chaos?

I tend to agree with this hypothesis. However , prior to the Tex, I had a GL1800 for 10 years from new. I remember there was an overheating issue on that and the fix was a complete replacement of the ECU to solve it. I am aware that technology has moved on since 2002 and accordingly a firmware update might sort out any issues.

Instead of wasting time developing "limp home modes" there time would be better used sourcing a reliable TPS sensor, or one that has been developed properly. I dont think Triumph understand product development though, they seem to have that area mixed up with there sales team.

My bike has been at the factory to have the top end, TPS, centre stand and final drive done and was returned to my dealer last week. He called me on Friday and asked me if I wanted to leave it with them as a recall on the ECU was likely to surface on Monday (today) or Tuesday this week. I said yes as I'm not in need of the bike at the moment and because I'm sure my dealer will do what is best for me and the bike.

There does seem to be some fire behind this smoke!
Didn't anyone tell you? It's my county!

Interesting info Nick, thanks. I think we got our bikes from the same place (TTT) so I'll be interested to hear more about this as & when it happens.

I was in Total triumph yesterday checking my bike would be ready to pick on Saturday after some Ass hole knocked it over and drove off and left me with a £17000 bill. I was told that my XC New in Sep 2013 was having a ECU or Softwear upgrade whilst its in the workshop???? So there is something going on.

Hmm, now we know it's not only a flying duck :084:

we even try to find out something at german Tiger-forum and dealers.
Furthermore will be changing ECU a question of VIN range again.
