Its simply bad material and wrongly engineered part. Yes it would be ok dor clutch only but after QS even Triumph realised a different part - stronger one- is needed. So they revised it. Btw new 6th gear is even much heavier then previous version

So in essence, this is a different issue that is likely caused by the quickshifter.

My 2013 is experiencing this issue and has no QS. I'm planning on replacing the shift selector as well as 2nd/6th gears - may as well do both if I'm already in there fixing stuff.

The selector shaft and detent wheel are accessed behind the coolant overflow bottle where the shifter mechanism attaches. The gearbox is behind the clutch. So you don't necessarily have to do them both at the same time. The selector shaft is an easy job that can be done in an hour or two.

Just wanted to share that a little over a year ago, I filed an official complaint with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (part of the Department of Transportation) flagging this as a safety issue due to loss of engine braking.  For those out side the USA, NHTSA manages vehicle recalls in the US.

Just today, I received a call from Triumph customer service to follow up on my complaint.  Basically they just wanted to know if it was still and issue and wanted to know what they could do to help. 

I let them know it was fixed by replacement the gear selector shaft and associated assembly as described excellently in this thread (thanks all).

For a remedy I suggested they recognize the issue with a recall or at the least issue a technical service bulletin so that the service departments would be more knowledgeable.

At least in the US, if a recall is issued, I can file a claim for reimbursement on repairs already completed.  I can only hope this happens now.

I did try to probe for more information, but the customer service person seemed to have very limited technical knowledge and said he was not a technician, so there was little information that I could gain worth sharing.

So long story short, the system is working, even if very slow.  I would encourage anyone that has this issue and believe it is a safety issue (as I do) report it to you regulator.

For those of you looking to do the fix this is what I found.

1: You should only need to order 3 parts, T1194444 Shaft Assy, Pivot Gear Change (£109.31), T1261426 Gasket, Gear Change Cover (£5.35), T3550542 Washer, Cu, Od12.5 x Id6.4 (£0.58).
2: Don't bother ordering the detent wheel, springs or anything else, you "shouldn't" need them.
3: The spring does NOT go in the hole.......

I ordered basically everything just to be on the safe side since I had a shift return spring snap on my Spring 1050GT a few weeks back but, after having done the repair I would say just do the 3 parts.
My old Detent Wheel was exactly as the new one, no wear at all, the springs are much heavier then the one that snapped on my 1050 GT so don't expect them to be an issue.
There is a noticeable difference with the size of the lugs on the new Shaft Assy so I suspect this will be a permanent fix but, if not £115 and 45 mins work every few years ain't that bad....

Local Dealer said they had never heard of the issue and wanted £90 to do a diagnostic test ride so a DIY fix makes a lot of sense given how easy it is to do.

I just bought the three parts you suggested.  Do you happen to have a video or guide on how to do it? The local agency is way too expensive and not covering anything. I want to explore other solutions before cashing out $500 bucks at the agency.

There is not much to it. Remove the plastic that is in front of the radiator coolant overflow bottle and remove the bottle. Remove the shifter linkage. Undo the bolts around the selector shaft cover, remove the cover, and carefully pull the whole assembly out.

Take lots of pictures of the assembly from different angles before you take it apart.

There is a washer on the other end of the selector shaft and there are holes that pass through to the gearbox, so be careful when you R & R the assembly to prevent the washer from falling into the gearbox. I temporarily covered the holes with rubber sheet.

When you put the assembly back, you have to lift the roller onto the detent wheel. I used some grease to hold the washer in place. That's about all there is to it.

So I went ahead and did the gear shaft replacement thing...

Removing the assembly was tricky so to avoid dropping the end washer...which almost happened a couple times. I had to wiggle it a bit to get it out, but it came out easily.

The "jaws" on the new assy were sharper than the one in my bike, which also showed a bit of wear (check the pictures). I took pictures of every step, to be careful and install things back in the right order and in the exact same positions. I couldn't record the process bc I didn't have that extra pair of hands...you'll need both hands for the job!





The new shaft was a bit longer, and the pedal came out a bit lower, which was easily fixed.

Putting it back in was a bit tricky, due to the spring and the roller that goes next to the detent wheel.

Went for a quick 15 min test ride and the gear changes felt smoother. the 3rd to neutral jump didn't happen, let's see how it goes on a longer and harder ride.
