Title: Explorer Service Manual is now in print
Post by: MarksMotorCycleParts on March 07, 2013, 07:17:49 PM
Hi,
The Explorer Service Manual is finished and I have started a print run.

Before anyone makes a firm commitment to buy, I’d like to distribute some sample pages, which are available on my Dropbox site.

update: links now dead as final product now in print

The finished article is printed on 80gsm paper, double sided, wire bound so that it will open out completely flat and with acetate front and back covers so that it is ‘wipe clean’.

It sells for £19.95 plus postage & packing costs of £4 – UK / £6 – Europe / £8 – Rest of World. Payment by Paypal please or alternatively cash on collection from Bath UK.

Please get in touch either by Private Message or by email to explorer.service.manual@gmail.com to register your interest, and please state your country for shipping.

If PMing please also include your Paypal email address, which will also be used to confirm to you when your manual is despatched and also to advise you if the manual is up-issued for any reason.

Thank you,
Mark Barrett

It seems to me you have done a good job with this manual.
But I got concerned when I saw this one, in the first part: 2.3 Greasing Threads
Triumph’s own manual provides torque wrench settings for dry threads. To prevent corrosion I
apply grease to most screw threads prior to re-assembly.

To my knowledge grease should never be used, the grease may have unwanted loosening of the bolt as consequence.
I use copper paste to avoid corrosion and sticking bolts, but never grease.

Am I far off, or is it language problems? Is copper paste regarded as grease?

Joachim....Yes Copper paste is generally considered a grease or anti seizure compound, I think Im correct in saying that if you scroll through the examples of the manual posted by Mark you will see that this issue is covered there with an explanation about torque values in relation to dry thread & what do do when torquing lubricated threads.

Yes Copper paste is generally considered a grease or anti seizure compound

That's right. I've always regarded Copper anti seize compound as grease, with the copper compound having a greater ability to retain its working properties at high temperatures, which is one of the reasons why its used on brakes and exhaust studs.

For the purposes of stopping fasteners corroding or seizing, there's very little to choose between them.

Not wishing to pull anyone up here....when a manufacturer states dry threads this is for a reason.
When threads are greased (appreciate what your saying about corrosion) but the torque loading on the bolt /nut will be increased significantly...over my years in the trade i have seen first hand the results of this where customers bring in there motors with sheared off bolts due to threads being greased.

I cannot see that your listing the torque limiter in you manual...how are you working around this please??

Malcolm,

I assume you mean the part used to tension the camchain when setting the valve timing.

In the manual a sequence of work is described so that by approaching things in the right order, tension is not released from the camchain when it will cause a problem for following work, hence there is no need for the alternative camchain tensioner or the torque limiter that is used to set it.

Cheers, Mark

Hey Mark, just to let you know the Service Manual arrived today in sunny Vancouver. I've got some wrenching that needs to be done in the next few days so I am pleased it is here.

For those who have not seen a copy or, are waiting for appropriate feedback on the manual, "It is top drawer" and that is the position it will occupy in my tool chest. (https://www.tiger-explorer.com/Smileys/light/152.gif)

Thanks again Mark

Hi Mark,
Today I used your manual, really pleased with it. Just a remark : there are no marks on the front wheel that shows the rotation-direction. Maybe you can mention that the ABS is on the left side of the wheel. My garage removed the old tyre from the wheel and could not figure out how to put on the new tyre. He did it the other way around ofcourse...

Good question there...I have the same issue unless you look carefully before the wheel removed.

How about a Kindle version?  Available on multiple platforms, very portable, and very secure distribution.  Amazon makes it easy to publish too.
Title: Re: Explorer Service Manual is now in print
Post by: MarksMotorCycleParts on January 08, 2014, 01:09:27 PM
I had wondered about a safe (copy proof) digital version, but I don't know much about he kindle format. I won't send it out on any format that can be copied or distributed.

I have a friend of a friend who publishes on Amazon and I'm told they take the lions share of the revenue, which makes it a less attractive option.

Having said that I'm open to suggestions.

Mark
Title: Re: Explorer Service Manual is now in print
Post by: SeattleExplorer on January 08, 2014, 02:59:44 PM
Bottom line question is do you expand your market enough at an acceptable profit margin while protecting your intellectual property.  With Kindle, your IP is safe from copying.  Amazon earns its share by a) providing an easy publication platform, b) expanding your distribution footprint, c) reducing your direct publishing costs and hassles, and d) protecting your IP.

I consume 90% of my reading content via Kindle now, and love the portability.  Don't know how many drawings there are in your book, and that's still the one less-than-perfect implementation in my experience with Kindle, so maybe that's a deal killer for you.

Full disclosure -- other than my Seattle location, I have NO connection to Amazon.

There's a ton of info on the Amazon kdp.amazon.com site.  My suggestion is take 20-30 minutes to see for yourself.

Unless you plan to earn a living from a high volume distribution I'd keep doing what you are doing now. Once it is out there in a vector digital format you can be sure it will be copied and available freely from anywhere sooner or later.

In my experience Kindles are hopeless for technical documentation as you cant control the drawings/ images well enough for relevance.

We differ; a manual belongs where you need it when you need it ...... for me that is on a USB thumb drive.

I just wish the only place I ever needed it was on a shelf in my air-conditioned heated garage and not on the road ....

Thanks Gents for the positive feedback.

I have had quite a few messages asking if the manual is still in print. It most certainly is and is selling well. If you want one then a PM to me is your best way - is available on Ebay but costs £5 more over there.

I've had a few questions about whether there will be a pdf version available. Sorry but the answer is not until there is a financially acceptable, reliable, copy proof way of publishing it. Until then I cannot release a digital copy. I realise that this is not ideal for some readers, but I do have to protect the significant effort that goes into writing these things. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Not sure if anyone's interested but I'm due to start on one for the 800 Tiger in 2 weeks time. It should be ready in early September.

Cheers, Mark

Hi Mark - totally agree with the "stay as you are" guys.  As you have said, there are too many out there who will then go ahead and crack it to allow your hard work to be exploited.  I take mine on tour and it fits neatly in a plastic wallet on the inside of my panniers, with copies of other docs.  Therefore I do not need to keep a laptop / tablet etc charged up.  I "read it", like a book should be read.

It's a great read and sits in my garage and aslo as a bit of light reading in my "throne room", such a useful, and easily used piece of kit.

Along side that I have just purchased your crash bar bags - again well made, fit perfectly and look the part.

Keep up the fantastic work Mark and let us all know if you come up with any more great ideas / gizmos or anything that will make our TEX experience any better.

All the best.

Ollyreid

Its always interesting to read the comments here. Thanks for the positive feedback - suggestions are always considered and incorporated wherever appropriate.

To answer the requests for a digital version, the situation hasn't changed. Each manual takes hundreds of hours to produce and I am not prepared put that amount of effort in and then distribute it in a way that invites free unlimited sharing. Sorry but I have to protect my work.

As far as future gizmos is concerned, I'm getting close to releasing a pair of electronic boxes. One switched fused 5 way outlet gives you power when the bike is running and features self healing fuses - if they blow then just power cycle it to repair the 'blown' fuse and another that gives you 4 USB charging sockets from 12V. Each built into a tiny plastic enclosure. More details to follow in a couple weeks.

Cheers, Mark

Hi Mark,

I received the manual today and spent a happy hour or so browsing through it.

Well I have to say what a professional job, well written and clear, you must be a technical author to turn out this kind of work.

The sample looked good, but the whole thing is the same high standard. Couldn't even find a typo, and that's unusual.

I would recommend it thoroughly, certainly better than Haynes efforts of late.

My manual arrived yesterday,  just in time to install all the accessories I ordered.  I flipped through it and read the sections about removing the plastics and tank as that's what I need to do. I will say it's well written,  clear, concise and plenty of photos.  Well worth the investment.  If you want a shop manual this is the one you need.

Morning guys,

The book has been out for two and a half years now and so far I've absorbed any price increase in getting it printed. However, costs have been going up so from the end of this month I'm going to have to put it up by a pound. Postage is unchanged.

From 1 Nov 2015 it'll be £21 plus p&p
p&p is £4 UK / £6 EU / £8 Rest of World

Thanks, Mark

No, the book doesn't cover the Mk2 bikes.

As pointed out below, the majority of tasks are the same, but the book doesn't include the servicing the electrically adjusted forks.

If anyone with a Mk2 bike near to Bath, UK, would like to help me I'd be pleased to give your bike a free service and upgrade the book at  the same time.

Thanks, Mark

Just like to say I've used the manual a couple of times in the last 3 years, for 10 + 20000 mile services. It's a great piece of kit and worth the 25 quid. I love the "special tools" alternatives which are scattered in various places.  :152: If I needed to get more in the guts of the motor I'd have to buy the factory manual but for servicing it's brilliant :028:

Mark, you could offer a free/cheap upgrade to buyer of the Gen1 manual to gen2/3 buyers, when the Gen2 or gen3 manuals become available.

Similar to many software upgrades.

It might make it easier for Tex owners to buy the manual, if they know they can upgrade when a newer one is out.

I have your manual, btw, and very useful it is too.

It was always in my plan to upgrade the book as time goes by, but as I have no access to a Gen 2 or 3 bike, that's been difficult up to now.  However I already do a small amount of servicing work and am happy to expand this side of my business. Where I would be able to take pictures as I go and then expand the book there would be no charge for any servicing work on your bike.
I'd not thought as far as discounting an updated book for existing customers but yes its something we can talk about once I have some new material to publish.
All the best, Mark

I assumed grease meant copperpaste when I read through the section about cleaning calipers so I used some on the back of the pads and retaining pins. Was I correct or do I need to wash that away and buy something else for grease ?
