Broken Smart (Dumb) key!

Has anyone else broken their Smart Key yet? Mine fell apart today after only 4000 miles  it has actually fractured so the pin broke which holds the key blade in place.

The dealers response was, they’ve never seen that before. My reply was well there’s a first time for everything, you have now and I have asked them to submit a warranty claim. I’ll keep you posted.

The problem is the luggage locks are very stiff and I have seen a post from Xatel on here saying he takes one of the spare keys with him if he is luggaged  up. With hind site, I wish I had done the same but I never force the key and have tried to lubricate the lock and fastener a couple of times to make it easier.

I don’t actually like the idea of having to carry 2 keys with me all the time because the main key isn’t man enough for the job. 

Give me a proper key any day.

This sure is interesting that so many people with the same bikes or same panniers have so many different results.  My  pannier locks are as smooth as butter on a hot summer day.  Is quality control that bad that some of us get great results while others are stuck with not so great results, are the panniers and locks not all coming from the same factory, or is it that Triumph is improving  their products from customers complaints.   I don't think will ever know because Triumph will never tell us.

I've been down this road a little now.

Have metal panniers the bike came with, so Triumph locks on Givi boxes and over time, three different Givi top boxes. All but one has nice smooth lock actions, the only stiff one was a Givi top box I brought new last year but as it used the Givi key I wasn't concerned about the Triumph master key.

I have now swapped two of the Givi locks for Triumph versions (quite a story behind that too) and acquired a dummy key from whoever was recommended in a previous key thread. I was quite careful to lightly grease up the surfaces while assembling the locks and I'm happy to say they're all nice and smooth again and I have one key to open four boxes! 

If you have a stiff lock, lock disassembly isn't particularly difficult, I would recommend a nice clean well lit area just in case, there is one spring a a ball bearing if you go to town and take it all apart, but to get to the surfaces that might need a little lube, I think you only need to take the Philips head screws out...

Two of mine work quite smoothly, and one is somewhat stiff.

Rather than turning the key with extr force, I found that if I apply light, but firm, inward (towards the pannier) pressure while turning the key, the "stiff" one works quite smoothly.

Hi guys thanks for the responses, initially the top box lock wasn’t too bad and as it gradually got stiffer I’ve lubed it a couple of times. In the week before the key broke we have had rain every day and the lock got stiffer to the point that it got very stiff in the last couple of days. I do as Jg_XRT suggests by pressing against the lock to help it and wouldn’t consider that it has been forced but it was obviously enough to break the key.

I posted this as a warning to others really and after spraying the lock and clasp yesterday with muck off silicone shine, it has freed off considerably. The good news is, Triumph have approved the claim for a replacement 👍the bad news is, it’s out of stock☹️.

I have also asked the dealership to submit a claim to strip and grease the locks to prevent another breakage.

Just to clarify, I don't press on the lock or the key- I put a little pressure on the moveable latch that you unhook to open the pannier.

My issue is only with one of the three boxes.
